Hartford
Area Habitat for Humanity and DeSai Learning to Provide
Community Service-Based Experiential Learning Platform
Hartford
Area Habitat for Humanity has teamed up with DeSai
Learning of West Hartford, CT to offer a new experiential
learning event consisting of facilitated group sessions
and volunteer work on a Habitat build site. An initial workshop
session allows learners to gain theory, concept insight,
and awareness while preparing for work at a Habitat site.
Volunteering as a team, at a Habitat home building site,
provides learners with team growth opportunities while they
help to eliminate substandard housing in the region. In
post volunteer day workshops, participants reflect on the
experiences and lessons learned while working together at
Habitat, and they serve as a venue for establishing valuable
personal commitments.
DeSai
and Habitat have held three learning sessions over the past
few months. The most recent was with senior IT executives
from a Fortune 100 insurance company. The focus of that event
was team building. Other experiential learning events are
offered on communication, conflict resolution, and change
management.
“We’re excited about working with Hartford Area Habitat
on this exciting project,” indicates Jatin DeSai, CEO and
president of DeSai Learning, “We’re able to help clients
improve business outcomes by blending classroom workshops
and experiential learning to build team effectiveness. And
we provide a valuable community service by working together
with Habitat.”
“The
opportunity to engage the learning community and area
businesses in the mission of Habitat is exciting,” says
Michael Berstene, executive director of Hartford Area
Habitat for Humanity. “Working together to eliminate
substandard housing while at the same time building
the skills needed by our leading businesses and organizations
is a terrific partnership between business and the community.
We are pleased to be a part of this creative solution.”
The
proven process serves as a foundation for real change
as it provides participants with clear insight about
the people they work with and how to work better with
them. It also provides a safe platform to work together
toward common goals while making a strong community
contribution. Experiential learning programs are available
to all area profit and non-profit organizations. Program
fees include a contribution to Habitat for Humanity.
