Many organizations are re-evaluating what they spend on IT research and development (R&D)—and how they spend it. That re-evaluation will have organizational implications and budget implications that cause organizations to reconsider how they prospect for technology opportunities. To keep IT innovation alive, IT R&D departments will have to be catalysts rather than idea initiators. A new collaborative, open model creates innovation processes that manage broader involvement, governance, and opportunity selection. IT will evolve from a department that just manages the stock of technology to the leader of a business discipline that responds to increasing change in technology markets and prepares for unknown technology opportunities while working closely with the business.
