Top of Training

The March edition of Training magazine includes the release of their Training Top 100 list. The companies on the list are honored for their high dedication to training and linking knowledge assets to business strategy. The extensive research that went into compiling the list revealed training efforts aimed at saving fuel, changing executive management, and improving customer service.

The metrics used by the companies to validate training included retention, new employee referrals, turnover rates, internal promotions, customer service, production, customer loyalty, revenue, and market share.

IBM leads the pack with efforts that included 74 benchmarking seminars, extensive impact studies, and $85 Million spent over two years on management training. IBM also took Best in Class in technology. Pfizer, inc. ranks second with unlimited tuition reimbursement, and onsite master’s programs. Pfizer also took Best in Class in healthcare.

Some Specifics

Of the 100 companies:

  • 99 use employee satisfaction surveys
  • 26 link managers’ pay to the development of their subordinates
  • 79 use a corporate university
  • 96 have a training or HR professional on the Board of Directors or on the executive team
  • 96 measure training effectiveness through Kirkpatrick’s Level 4
  • 75 measure training effectiveness through ROI

Metrics:

  • Average percent of payroll spent on training for top 100 is 4.11% and for top 5 is 11%
  • Total training budget for top 100 is $6.6 Billion and for the top 10 is 2.7 Billion
  • Average annual training hours per employee for top 100 is 54 and for the top 5 is 168
  • Ratio of full-time trainers to employees for the top 100 is 1:263 and for the top 10 is 1:62
  • Average number of full-time trainers for the top 100 is 190 and for the top 10 is 807
  • Average tuition spent for the top 100 is $5.3 Million and for the top 10 is $26.4 Million
  • Average reimbursement of tuition for the top 100 is 7.5% and for the top 10 is 18.9%
