How much is the industry spending on training?

We hear about companies spending millions on training. But just how much are they spending? Are more employees receiving training? Are the companies spending more for each employee? Are they spending more on training salaries?

The percentages and dollar amounts may vary from other studies reported. The numbers differ some between studies due to the different companies used in the study and reporting methods.

The companies in the study made heavier investments in employee training. In 2002, they spent a higher percentage of payroll (without benefits), spending 2.2 percent, which is up from 1.9 percent in 2001. The average training amount spent per employee was also up from $734 in 2001 to $826 in 2002. Training magazine reported that companies in their Top 100 Training Companies list spent 4.1 percent of payroll on training in 2002.

More employees received training. In 2002, 79.2 percent of employees received training. This is up from 75.8 in 2001. These employees spent an average 28.0 hours in training, which is up from 23.7 in 2001. The average expenditure for each of those training days was also up from $281 per day in 2001, to $369 in 2002.

Training Staff
The ratio of employees to training staff decreased in 2002 from 383 in 2001 down to 280. However, training salaries increased significantly.

Training Department Salaries
Title 2002 2001
Training Manager $89,751 $62,695
Performance Consultant $80,671 $42,557
Instructional Designer $56,900 $42,601
Trainer $59,875 $44,760

75 percent of the companies performed level 1 evaluations. This was down from 91 percent in 2001. Level 2, 3, and 4 evaluations were up with 11 percent performing level 2, 21 percent performing level 3, and 11 percent performing level 4.

Evaluation Resources:

It is evident that these companies believe that the millions spent on training is a sound investment.
