How much is the industry spending on
training?
We hear about companies spending millions
on
training.
But
just
how
much
are
they
spending?
Are
more
employees
receiving
training?
Are
the
companies
spending
more
for
each
employee?
Are
they
spending
more
on
training
salaries?
The percentages and dollar amounts may
vary
from
other
studies
reported.
The
numbers
differ
some
between
studies
due
to
the
different
companies
used
in
the
study
and
reporting
methods.
The companies in the study made heavier
investments
in
employee
training.
In
2002,
they
spent
a
higher
percentage
of
payroll
(without
benefits),
spending
2.2
percent,
which
is
up
from
1.9
percent
in
2001.
The
average
training
amount
spent
per
employee
was
also
up
from
$734
in
2001
to
$826
in
2002.
Training
magazine
reported
that
companies
in
their
Top
100
Training
Companies
list
spent
4.1
percent
of
payroll
on
training
in
2002.
More employees received training. In 2002,
79.2
percent
of
employees
received
training.
This
is
up
from
75.8
in
2001.
These
employees
spent
an
average
28.0
hours
in
training,
which
is
up
from
23.7
in
2001.
The
average
expenditure
for
each
of
those
training
days
was
also
up
from
$281
per
day
in
2001,
to
$369
in
2002.
Training Staff
The
ratio
of
employees
to
training
staff
decreased
in
2002
from
383
in
2001
down
to
280.
However,
training
salaries
increased
significantly.
