Are You Ready for e-Learning?
As the latest reports have shown, the trend
to
use
computer-based
training
(CBT)
continues.
Convenience
and
long-term
cost
savings
have
contributed
greatly
to
the
increasing
popularity.
The
decision
to
move
to
e-learning
should
be
a
calculated
one.
E-learning
may
not
fit
your
culture
or
general
preparedness.
That
is
not
a
signal
to
forego
the
transfer
to
e-learning,
but
that
the
road
will
require
additional
planning
and
preparation.
The first step is to evaluate where you
are
as
far
as
the
senior
management
support,
technology,
and
learner
attitudes
toward
CBT.
The
CBT
initiative
will
not
successfully
move
far
forward
without
the
support
of
senior
management.
If
the
support
exists,
the
next
step
is
to
evaluate
present
technology
and
the
users?
comfort
level
with
it.
The
overall
attitude
of
the
group
must
develop
to
the
point
where
the
idea
of
CBT
is
accepted.
Organizational readiness requires:
- Environment that is supportive to the concept
- Training that is appropriate
- Learner support system that includes available
time,
technical
support,
and
encouragement
- Buy-in from upper level management
- Resources to support the development and
delivery
of
the
learning
Learner readiness requires:
- Perception that the learning is valuable
- Support with the time to learn
- Comfort with the technology
- Perception that they are supported by management
- Support for help with any technical issues
- Support from management for the time involved
to
e-learn
The second step is to determine where you
want
to
go.
The
road
to
purchasing
or
subscribing
to
e-learning
is
much
different
than
the
one
to
the
development
of
it.
If
possible,
try
to
determine
if
developing
CBT
is
in
the
future
or
not.
